🌊 REEFING CANADA INC.
Sourcing & Sustainability Policy
1. Our Commitment
Reefing Canada Inc. is committed to advancing sustainable reef-keeping practices while protecting coral reef ecosystems worldwide. We recognize that the marine ornamental trade can either contribute to conservation or cause ecological harm depending on how it is managed.
Our sourcing strategy is built on:
- Legal compliance
- Traceability
- Animal welfare
- Preference for aquaculture
- Transparency
- Long-term reef conservation impact
2. Legal & Regulatory Compliance
We strictly comply with:
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) aquatic animal import regulations
- Health of Animals Regulations
- Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) declaration requirements
- CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) permitting requirements
- All applicable provincial and federal wildlife and fisheries laws
No livestock is imported or sold without proper documentation.
We maintain traceable records of:
- Supplier identity
- Country of origin
- Export health certificates
- CITES documentation (when applicable)
- Import permit numbers
- Date of arrival
- Quarantine clearance status
3. Sourcing Hierarchy
We prioritize livestock sourcing in the following order:
Tier 1 – Captive-Bred / Aquacultured (Preferred)
- Captive-bred marine fish
- Aquacultured corals (fragged or farmed)
- Tank-raised invertebrates
This reduces pressure on wild reef ecosystems and improves survivability in captivity.
Tier 2 – Certified Sustainable Wild Collection
If captive-bred stock is unavailable:
- Only licensed exporters
- Non-destructive collection methods
- No cyanide fishing
- Compliance with local fisheries management programs
- Export documentation verified
Tier 3 – Restricted Species Policy
We do not import or sell:
- Prohibited species under Canadian law
- Critically endangered species without lawful CITES authorization
- Species with historically poor survivability in captivity
4. Animal Welfare Standards
We commit to:
- Minimizing transport time
- Strict acclimation procedures
- Dedicated quarantine systems
- Disease monitoring protocols
- Refusal of visibly compromised livestock
Livestock health takes priority over sales volume.
5. Quarantine & Biosecurity
All imported livestock undergoes a mandatory quarantine period before being offered for sale. Our quarantine procedures include:
- Separate system isolation
- Water quality monitoring
- Health observation
- Prophylactic treatment (when appropriate)
- Feeding response testing
No livestock is released for retail until cleared.
6. Reef Conservation Commitment
Reefing Canada Inc. supports coral reef conservation through:
- Promotion of captive-bred alternatives
- Educational content on sustainable reefing
- Transparent sourcing information
- Long-term goal: in-house coral propagation to reduce wild collection reliance
- Potential revenue allocation toward reef restoration initiatives
7. Transparency to Customers
Customers have the right to know:
- Whether livestock is captive-bred or wild-collected
- Country of origin
- Date of import
- Quarantine duration
We will provide this information upon request.
